A Strategic Roadmap for Sustainable Growth: Telefónica’s 2026-2030 Corporate Framework

October 2, 2026

Telefónica has introduced a comprehensive strategy for the years 2026 through 2030 that embeds sustainability directly into its core business operations. Known as the Sustainability Plan, this initiative serves as a primary driver for the company’s broader "Transform & Grow" agenda. By aligning environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors with corporate decision-making, the company aims to enhance its competitiveness and generate tangible value across four specific dimensions: business growth, operational efficiency, risk management, and the attraction of investment capital.

The strategy is organized into twelve distinct lines of action categorized under the three ESG pillars. The environmental segment focuses on achieving a low-carbon business model. Key targets for 2030 include transitioning to 100% renewable energy use, securing 50% of power through purchase agreements (PPAs), and slashing value chain emissions by 56% relative to 2016 levels. Furthermore, the company is prioritizing a circular economy through a "Zero Waste" commitment that emphasizes equipment reuse and recycling. To safeguard its infrastructure, Telefónica plans to conduct individualized climate risk assessments for over 5,000 vital assets by the end of the decade.

On the social front, the plan addresses the digital divide by expanding fiber and 5G connectivity to rural areas and improving accessibility for seniors and people with disabilities. The company also aims to foster internal diversity, setting a goal for women to occupy 37% of management roles by 2027. This social commitment extends to promoting digital well-being and maintaining high standards for sustainable branding and content creation.

Governance within the plan centers on ethical technology and financial responsibility. Telefónica is integrating ethical Artificial Intelligence, robust cybersecurity, and privacy-by-design principles into its technical deployment. The company also monitors its supply chain closely, aiming to vet more than 95% of high-risk suppliers by 2030. Financial sustainability is already a significant component of the firm's structure; projections for 2025 indicate that sustainable financing represents over 40% of its total funding. By linking these ESG milestones to financial performance, Telefónica seeks to mitigate market volatility and capitalize on new revenue streams related to green digitalization.
