Ericsson has expanded its long-standing collaboration with Swedish industrial equipment manufacturer Epiroc to include the distribution of private LTE and 5G networking solutions for the global mining sector. The renewed agreement builds upon nearly a decade of research and development cooperation between the two companies, focusing on the integration of advanced connectivity into heavy machinery. This partnership aims to accelerate the adoption of automated mining processes by providing dedicated wireless infrastructure.
The agreement allows Epiroc to distribute Ericsson’s private network portfolio directly to mining customers alongside its own equipment. By embedding cellular technology into the mining workflow, both companies intend to improve operational efficiency and safety in hazardous underground environments. The shift from standard research to a commercial distribution model reflects growing demand for reliable, high-capacity connectivity in industrial settings where traditional networks often fail to perform.
Private cellular networks are increasingly seen as a critical component for the future of autonomous mining operations. LTE and 5G technologies provide the low latency and high bandwidth required for real-time remote control of drills, loaders, and haulage trucks.
