Eurobites: Vodafone drives connected-car tech for Geely

Vodafone has entered into a strategic partnership with Geely to provide global internet of things connectivity for several of the automotive manufacturer’s vehicle brands within the European market. The agreement will see the telecommunications operator supply integrated connectivity solutions for Geely brands including Zeekr, Lynk and Co, and Lotus as they expand their presence across the continent. This collaboration aims to support advanced in-car features and infotainment systems that require stable, high-speed data transmission for international roaming.
The project involves the deployment of Vodafone’s managed internet of things platform, which allows vehicles to maintain consistent cellular connections across different national borders. By utilizing this infrastructure, Geely can ensure that its digital services, such as real-time navigation and emergency assistance, remain functional for drivers throughout Europe. The integration is expected to facilitate better vehicle diagnostics and remote software updates, often referred to as over-the-air improvements, which are becoming standard requirements in the modern electric vehicle sector.
In parallel developments within the European infrastructure landscape, Openreach has introduced new financial incentives for broadband service providers to accelerate the migration of customers to full-fibre networks. The United Kingdom infrastructure arm of BT Group is offering these discounted rates to encourage the uptake of its fibre-to-the-premises products. These commercial sweeteners are designed to help retailers manage the costs of transitioning users from legacy copper lines to high-bandwidth digital connections as the company nears its nationwide coverage targets.
Meanwhile, the Finnish government has announced plans to implement a new national alerts system to enhance public safety communications. This modernized framework will leverage mobile network infrastructure to broadcast emergency messages directly to citizens' handsets during critical situations. The initiative follows a wider trend across several European Union member states to digitize civil protection services and ensure that warning systems are more resilient against local infrastructure outages or cyber threats.
Further global activity in the fixed-access segment involves InCoax Networks, which has secured an agreement with a Tier 1 telecommunications provider in the United States. This contract focuses on the deployment of multi-gigabit broadband services using existing coaxial cables in multi-dwelling units. The technology allows operators to deliver high-speed data without the need for extensive rewiring within older buildings, providing a cost-effective alternative for urban broadband expansion.
These technological developments highlight the increasing reliance on integrated connectivity across multiple sectors, from automotive and transportation to residential broadband. As Vodafone embeds its connectivity solutions within the Geely fleet, the partnership is expected to drive further innovation in the connected-car segment.
