Eurobites: Voimatel hooks up with Eutelsat to reach High North

Finnish critical infrastructure service provider Voimatel has entered into a strategic partnership with Eutelsat Group to enhance connectivity across the Nordic region. The collaboration aims to deploy high-speed satellite broadband services to remote areas where traditional terrestrial infrastructure is difficult to implement. By leveraging Eutelsat’s Low Earth Orbit satellite constellation, Voimatel intends to provide reliable data links to government agencies, emergency services, and industrial enterprises operating in the High North.

The agreement focuses on delivering low-latency communications to sectors that require constant uptime, such as energy utilities and logistics firms. Voimatel will integrate the satellite capacity into its existing portfolio of managed services, ensuring that users in geographically isolated locations remain connected to the central grid. This move is expected to bridge the digital divide in Northern Europe, specifically addressing the connectivity gaps found in the Arctic and sub-Arctic zones.

In addition to terrestrial developments, the Nordic aviation sector is seeing increased activity regarding next-generation connectivity solutions. Flag carrier Finnair has confirmed it is currently in discussions with multiple satellite providers, including SpaceX’s Starlink and Amazon’s Project Kuiper, to upgrade its in-flight Wi-Fi capabilities. The airline is evaluating these Low Earth Orbit systems to provide passengers with higher bandwidth and lower latency during long-haul flights, reflecting a broader trend of airlines shifting away from traditional geostationary satellite services.

Meanwhile, Swedish equipment vendor Ericsson is expanding its footprint within the industrial sector by deepening its involvement in the mining industry. The company is deploying private 5G networks to facilitate the automation of heavy machinery and improve safety protocols in underground environments. These private networks allow mining operators to utilise real-time data analytics and remote-controlled equipment, which significantly reduces the physical risks faced by personnel working in hazardous conditions.

Belgian telecommunications operator Proximus has also reached a technical milestone by successfully implementing 5G standalone network slicing. This technology allows the operator to partition its network into multiple virtual layers, each tailored to specific performance requirements for different enterprise customers. By offering dedicated slices with guaranteed throughput and latency, Proximus aims to support mission-critical applications such as autonomous transport and smart city management systems.

These developments across the EMEA region highlight a significant shift towards diversified connectivity technologies. The integration of satellite, private 5G, and network slicing demonstrates how operators are moving beyond basic consumer mobile services to address complex industrial needs. As Voimatel begins the rollout of its new satellite-based offerings, the market will monitor how these hybrid communication models perform under the extreme weather conditions characteristic of the Nordic territories.
