GSMA, partners target drone airspace safety

The collaborative effort aims to establish a unified framework that ensures unmanned aerial vehicles can operate alongside commercial aircraft without causing interference or security risks. This initiative highlights the growing necessity for standardised communication methods as the density of drone traffic increases across urban and rural environments.
A collective position paper issued by the group outlines the requirement for reliable cellular networks to facilitate real-time monitoring of drone activities. By leveraging existing mobile infrastructure, the partners believe that authorities can achieve greater visibility over low-altitude flight paths. The document stresses that without a coordinated approach between the telecommunications and aviation sectors, the potential for collisions or unauthorised aerial incursions remains high.
The coalition includes major stakeholders from across the technology landscape who are advocating for the adoption of remote identification technologies. These systems would allow law enforcement and aviation regulators to identify the ownership and intent of drones operating in restricted or sensitive areas.
