Meta taps Reliance for India AI data centre

August 13, 2026

Meta Platforms has entered into a strategic agreement with Reliance Industries to lease its first artificial intelligence-focused data centre facility in India. The facility is expected to serve as a hub for the technology giant as it seeks to expand its digital infrastructure and technical capabilities within the South Asian market. This move marks a significant deepening of the existing relationship between the two companies, which already encompasses various digital and telecommunications initiatives.

The new data centre will be located in Chennai and is designed to handle the high computational demands required for artificial intelligence applications and large-scale data processing. By securing a dedicated facility in India, Meta aims to reduce latency for its regional services and improve the performance of its suite of applications for local users. The infrastructure will support the growing demand for data-heavy features across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

Reliance Industries has been actively investing in digital infrastructure through its various subsidiaries to position itself as a leading provider of data services in the region. The partnership allows Meta to leverage the domestic expertise and established network reach of the Indian conglomerate. This collaboration is part of a broader trend where international technology firms seek local partnerships to navigate regulatory requirements and infrastructure challenges in emerging markets.

The deployment of AI-enabled hardware in the Chennai facility reflects the increasing importance of localised data processing for global technology firms. By processing data closer to the end-user, Meta can ensure more efficient delivery of content and better integration of machine learning models into its consumer-facing products. The agreement also aligns with the Indian government’s initiatives to encourage domestic data storage and infrastructure development.

India currently represents one of the largest user bases for Meta globally, making the establishment of local server capacity a logical step in its long-term regional strategy. The company has previously invested heavily in the Indian market, including a multi-billion dollar stake in Jio Platforms. This latest venture into physical infrastructure indicates a commitment to scaling its operations to match the rapid digital adoption seen across the country.

Industry analysts suggest that the move could prompt further investments from other global hyperscalers looking to secure their own data centre footprints in India. As the demand for cloud services and artificial intelligence tools continues to climb, the requirement for specialised facilities will likely drive more partnerships between international tech players and domestic industrial groups. Meta and Reliance are expected to continue exploring additional avenues for collaboration in the digital space.

The operational launch of the data centre is expected to facilitate the rollout of new AI-driven features specifically tailored for the Indian demographic. Meta intends to monitor the performance of this initial facility before considering further expansions into other major Indian metropolitan areas. The ongoing development of this site marks a pivotal point in the evolution of India's digital ecosystem and its role in the global technology landscape.
