MTN Group Debuts Artificial Intelligence Career Tool to Support African Youth Employment

August 12, 2026

In observation of International Youth Day on August 12, 2026, MTN Group has introduced a new artificial intelligence-driven career portal within its existing Skills Academy. This initiative is designed to bridge the divide between education and employment by helping young people throughout Africa find work in the modern digital landscape. By consolidating educational resources and employment listings into a single interface, the telecommunications company aims to streamline the transition from student to professional. Unlike traditional websites that only list open positions, this new tool analyzes how a user's current capabilities match specific job requirements and suggests free coursework to fill any identified knowledge gaps.

The launch comes at a critical time for the continent, which currently holds the title of the world's youngest population, with six out of ten people under 25 years old. Research from the International Finance Corporation suggests that by the end of the decade, roughly 230 million positions in sub-Saharan Africa will necessitate some level of technical proficiency. Marina Madale, who serves as MTN's Group Executive for Sustainability and Shared Value, noted that while young Africans come from diverse backgrounds, they share a common goal of obtaining the skills necessary for economic participation. The platform currently operates in 11 different countries where MTN maintains a presence, offering a localized experience that allows users to filter jobs by location and track their progress from the initial application through to the final job offer.

Since its inception in 2022, the MTN Skills Academy has focused on teaching high-demand subjects such as data analytics, cybersecurity, coding, and entrepreneurship. To date, the program has seen over half a million enrollments and nearly 200,000 course completions. The platform is built with inclusivity in mind, featuring accessible design elements for individuals with various physical or cognitive disabilities. By providing certified digital credentials and personalized career recommendations, MTN is working to ensure that digital access leads directly to tangible economic opportunities for the next generation of African workers.
