Pioneering AI-Driven Payment Milestone Achieved by Mastercard, Flybits, and Rogers Bank in Canada

September 29, 2026

A trio of industry leaders has reached a significant technological landmark in North America by completing Canada’s inaugural secure transaction using autonomous AI agents. This collaborative effort between the global payments network Mastercard, the technology firm Flybits, and the financial branch of Rogers Communications signifies a shift toward agentic commerce. This emerging field involves artificial intelligence systems that are capable of executing financial decisions and purchases on behalf of individuals, adhering to specific guidelines provided by the user.

During a practical demonstration of this technology, an artificial intelligence assistant developed by Flybits processed a request from a Rogers Red credit card user. The AI was tasked with locating a specific item that met the user’s budgetary requirements and then finalizing the payment. The transaction was facilitated through the Mastercard Agent Pay framework, a global system designed to ensure that such automated interactions remain interoperable, safe, and transparent. By utilizing these protocols, the system ensures that every automated action is backed by verified consumer consent and restricted by predetermined spending caps.

The initiative addresses a growing interest in automated shopping among the Canadian public. Recent data indicates that over 40% of people in Canada are receptive to using digital assistants for online shopping tasks. Furthermore, among those who view AI tools favorably, more than half are comfortable allowing these systems to make purchases if they stay within defined personal preferences and financial limits. This suggests a significant market potential for technologies that simplify the consumer journey while maintaining high security standards.

Central to this project is the concept of explainability and user governance. Flybits provides the contextual intelligence layer that not only offers customized suggestions but also clarifies the reasoning behind each recommendation. Looking ahead, the partners intend to integrate Mastercard Insight Tokens. These tokens will allow AI agents to use permissioned data in a secure, regulated manner, fostering even more dynamic and personalized shopping experiences. By establishing these early benchmarks, Mastercard, Flybits, and Rogers Bank are creating a blueprint for a future where digital commerce is increasingly automated yet remains firmly under the control of the individual consumer.
