Ralph Mupita of MTN Group Selected for International AI Advisory Role

July 6, 2026

The International Telecommunication Union, a specialized agency of the United Nations, has officially inducted Ralph Mupita into the newly formed AI for Good Global Commission. Mupita, who serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the telecommunications giant MTN Group, joins this body as a founding member. The commission's primary mandate involves fostering the expansion of digital availability, building public confidence in emerging technologies, and utilizing artificial intelligence to stimulate economic growth in a responsible manner.

Comprised of a diverse group of more than 40 leaders from the public and private sectors, as well as international bodies, the commission seeks to harness the capabilities of artificial intelligence for the betterment of society. This initiative is an evolution of the previous Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development, which focused on establishing worldwide standards for economic progress and digital accessibility. The new body is led by co-chairs Marc Benioff, the CEO of Salesforce, and Paul Kagame, the President of Rwanda. The inaugural session for this group is scheduled to convene in Geneva, Switzerland.

Upon his selection, Mupita emphasized the transformative power of AI in critical sectors such as food security, industrial output, healthcare, and education. He noted that for these advancements to be successful, the technology must be developed within a framework that is ethically sound, safe, and inclusive of global perspectives. These principles mirror the current strategic objectives of MTN Group, which is working to integrate artificial intelligence into its own business model to drive substantial growth.

MTN Group, recognized as the most prominent telecommunications provider across the African continent, has set ambitious targets for its technological evolution. The company aims to generate approximately R30 billion in value through AI-driven initiatives over the coming three to five years. Mupita’s participation in the UN-led commission ensures that the company’s internal goals remain in lockstep with international efforts to ensure that advances in high-level computing benefit all of humanity.
