Telefónica Enhances Cultural Heritage in Bermeo Through Advanced Digital Integration

June 28, 2026

A new cultural facility has been established in Bermeo to safeguard and showcase the coastal town’s unique traditions and landmarks. This initiative, driven by the local municipal government, utilizes state-of-the-art digital tools to create an engaging environment for visitors. Telefónica, operating through its specialized tech division, served as the primary technical partner for the project. By supplying the necessary infrastructure and creative media, the company has transformed the way historical information is presented to the public, ensuring that the legacy of this fishing community is preserved for future generations.

To power this interactive space, Telefónica installed a comprehensive suite of hardware and networking solutions. The facility is equipped with high-performance laser projectors, tactile display screens, synchronized audio hardware, and specialized computing systems to manage the multimedia output. Beyond the physical equipment, the company also oversaw the creation of the digital narratives that drive the user experience. These tools allow visitors to engage with the town's history through modern interfaces, moving beyond traditional static displays to a more dynamic form of education.

One of the central features of the museum is an interactive historical chronology titled "Kings, pirates, pilgrims and influencers." This installation allows guests to navigate significant local events using a library of images and short narratives, which are available in Basque, Spanish, English, and French. Additionally, a dedicated cinematic area broadcasts subtitled films focusing on maritime rituals, natural landscapes, and local festivities like San Juan and San Ignacio. One of the most technologically ambitious sections is the "241 steps" installation, which provides a virtual, 360-degree simulation of the ascent to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, complete with ambient soundscapes and guided narration.

The project places a high priority on inclusivity and ease of use. By incorporating multilingual support, audio adaptations, and subtitles, the museum ensures that the content is reachable for a broad spectrum of visitors. This collaboration represents Telefónica’s broader strategy to act as a digital bridge between citizens and their local heritage, using innovation to foster deeper connections with the environment. By merging local identity with advanced technology, the Bermeo project serves as a model for how modern connectivity can revitalize the cultural and tourism sectors.
