VMO2, Mavenir trial tech for hearing-impaired users

Virgin Media O2 has successfully completed a proof-of-concept trial in partnership with Mavenir aimed at improving mobile call clarity for customers with hearing impairments. The project focused on implementing network-based technology that enhances audio quality directly through the infrastructure rather than requiring specific handset modifications. This approach ensures that users can benefit from clearer communication without the need to purchase specialised hardware or download additional applications.

The trial utilised Mavenir’s cloud-native IMS core and specialized media processing capabilities to adjust audio frequencies during live calls. By boosting specific frequency ranges that are often difficult for those with hearing loss to perceive, the system aims to provide a more intelligible conversational experience. This network-level intervention is designed to work seamlessly across different device types and legacy hardware, ensuring broad accessibility for the operator's diverse customer base.

Technical teams from both companies worked to integrate these audio enhancement algorithms into the existing Virgin Media O2 network environment. The proof-of-concept demonstrated that real-time voice processing could be achieved with minimal latency, maintaining the natural flow of conversation while significantly sharpening the audio profile. This development addresses a significant barrier for millions of mobile users who struggle with standard telephony audio profiles.

This initiative aligns with broader industry efforts to improve digital inclusion and accessibility across telecommunications services. As mobile networks transition toward fully virtualised and cloud-native architectures, operators are increasingly able to deploy bespoke services that cater to specific demographic needs. The collaboration highlights how software-defined networking can be leveraged to deliver social benefits alongside standard connectivity improvements.

Currently, standard mobile voice calls follow a uniform audio profile that may not be suitable for all hearing profiles. By moving the enhancement to the network layer, Virgin Media O2 intends to remove the burden of accessibility from the end-user. The success of this trial suggests that similar technologies could eventually be scaled to support a wider range of sensory requirements across the United Kingdom.

Following the successful completion of the technical trial, the partners will now evaluate the performance data and user feedback gathered during the testing phase. Virgin Media O2 has indicated that the insights gained from this proof-of-concept will inform its future roadmap for inclusive communication services. Further testing may be required before a commercial rollout is considered for the wider public network.
